The Rome City School District is seeking 2 skilled and dependable Building Maintenance Mechanics to join our team and help maintain safe, functional, and well-maintained school facilities for our students, staff, and school community.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced tradesperson who enjoys hands-on work, problem-solving, and working across a variety of building systems and maintenance needs.

Candidates currently holding the Building Maintenance Mechanic title or meeting the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply. If not currently holding the title, the appointment will be on a provisional basis pending success on the civil service exam and reachability on the eligible list. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs skilled repair and maintenance work or supervises a number of semi-skilled workers in a buildings and grounds maintenance and repair program; does related work as required.
 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a broad class involving a variety of building maintenance and repair tasks of a skilled nature. The work usually involves a number of different trades although employees, by reason of personal training and experience, may devote much of their time to work of a single trade. In this respect the class differs from such other occupations as painter, carpenter, plumber, which limit incumbents to a single trade. Incumbents perform their duties with some latitude for independent planning or lay out of work details. Supervision may be exercised over maintenance workers or laborers.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Performs repairs to plumbing, steam lines, electric wiring and equipment, furniture, doors and windows, hardware and varied mechanical equipment and machinery as related to heating, ventilating and air conditioning;
  • Installs shelving, storage cabinets and new hardware;
  • Does skilled painting work;
  • Oversees and takes part in ordinary building cleaning operations;
  • Estimates material required for repairs;
  • Keeps daily time and material records;
  • Supervises and participates in a general grounds maintenance program.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Thorough knowledge of standard building maintenance and repair practices, materials and tools;
  • Thorough knowledge of at least one building trade; working knowledge of one or more additional trades;
  • Ability to plan and on occasion supervise the work of others;
  • Ability to understand oral and written directions;
  • Mechanical aptitude;
  • Dependability;
  • Thoroughness;
  • Good physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:

  1. Possession of Associate’s Degree in construction, engineering technology, or a closely related field AND one (1) year of experience in building construction or one of the standard trades; OR
  2. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND three (3) years of experience in building construction or one of the standard trades; OR
  3. Four (4) years of experience in building construction or one of the standard trades.

The Rome City School District welcomes applications from candidates who are currently enrolled in a School Psychology graduate program and are eligible to complete a supervised internship, practicum, or field placement as part of their certification requirements. Qualified candidates will be paired with an experienced, New York State-certified School Psychologist who will serve as a mentor and supervisor. The District will provide the supervision, guidance, and performance evaluations necessary to support the completion of required clinical and fieldwork hours toward New York State certification/licensure. This opportunity offers valuable hands-on experience in a diverse Pre-K–12 educational setting while receiving ongoing professional support and development.

Position Overview:

The School Psychologist plays a critical role in promoting student success by applying psychological and educational expertise to support academic achievement, social-emotional development, and behavioral well-being. This position involves collaboration with educators, families, and outside agencies to assess student needs, develop targeted interventions, and support data-driven decision-making for students in Pre-K through grade 12.

This role may require occasional flexibility in scheduling to accommodate meetings with families or partner agencies outside of the traditional school day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct psychological evaluations aligned with professional and regulatory standards.
  • Analyze academic, behavioral, and social-emotional data to inform instructional planning and eligibility determinations.
  • Consider cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic factors when evaluating students.
  • Synthesize multiple data sources to develop recommendations for programming and support.
  • Design and implement evidence-based academic and behavioral interventions.
  • Provide counseling and skill-building support to students.
  • May be required to run CSE meetings to monitor student progress and adjust interventions based on data.
  • Support development of positive learning environments that foster student engagement and resilience.
  • Partner with teachers, administrators, and families to address barriers to learning.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including IEP development and review.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to promote positive behavioral interventions.
  • Support development and implementation of prevention programs and initiatives that promote safe and supportive school environments.

Qualifications:

  • Valid New York State certification as a School Psychologist.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong assessment, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working in diverse school settings.
  • Training or experience in culturally responsive practices.
  • Ability to travel between district sites; mileage reimbursement provided.
