The Rome City School District is anticipating a vacancy for a one to one Teacher Aide. In this role, you will provide individualized support to a student with special needs, while also assisting teachers and administrators with various classroom and non-instructional tasks. Your support will help foster a positive, inclusive, and productive learning environment tailored to students who require additional academic and behavioral support.

As a Teacher Aide, you will play a key role in helping students successfully navigate the school day by offering consistent guidance, supervision, and encouragement.

Position Overview & Compensation

  • Schedule: 10-month position, 6 hours per day.

  • Starting Salary: $18.80 per hour + competitive benefits package.

  • Growth Opportunity: Teacher Aides may choose to obtain their Teacher Assistant certification to qualify for a higher rate of pay within the district.

Qualified candidates should possess a high school diploma/GED and have a strong ability to build supportive relationships with students and the flexibility to meet individual needs in a school setting. Experience in education or working with children is a plus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Either:

  1. Graduation from high school, supplemented by additional experience and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved;  OR

  2. Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

TEACHER AIDE

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Assists school teachers and administrators in the performance of teaching and non-teaching functions by performing varied operational duties associated with the teaching process within the building setting.  Does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This title is employed for positions which are created for the main purpose of relieving school personnel, assisting teachers and administrators of that part of their duties, which while related to the teaching process, can be performed by non-professional personnel.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  (Illustrative only)

  • Assists with daily attendance;

  • Assists with general library functions;

  • Performs simple clerical duties – may include phone calls;

  • Oversees students in non-structured periods (i.e., breakfast, lunch, playground, bus duty, before and after school);

  • Supervises in-school suspension, time-out and lunch detention.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Good general intelligence;

  • Ability to establish good relationships with children and others;

  • Familiarity with classroom and/or library routine;

  • Good background or knowledge in a specific field where specialized duties are involved;

  • Above average clerical aptitude;

  • Resourcefulness in conducting the above-described activities indirectly related to the teaching process and/or library process;

  • Neat personal appearance;

  • Ability to maintain discipline;

  • Exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment;

  • Good physical condition.

Special Education Teacher (6th Grade)353

The Rome City School District is seeking a student-centered Special Education/Resource Teacher to support high school students with diverse learning needs for an anticipated vacancy in a 6th Grade co-taught classroom. The ideal candidate will provide academic and organizational support to students to foster an inclusive, engaging, and accessible learning environment that promotes creativity, independence, and academic success for all learners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide resource room and special education support services to high school students in accordance with IEP goals and New York State regulations.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to deliver differentiated, team-taught instruction aligned with New York State Learning Standards and student learning needs.
  • Adapt and modify instructional materials, projects, assignments, and assessments to support students with disabilities across academic settings.
  • Support students in developing executive functioning, organization, study skills, self-advocacy, and graduation readiness skills.
  • Implement accommodations, modifications, and assistive technologies to ensure meaningful participation and access to curriculum.
  • Create a structured, supportive learning environment that promotes engagement, independence, and positive behavior.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, counselors, and support staff to ensure student success in inclusive settings.
  • Monitor and document student progress through data collection, formative assessments, and IEP goal tracking.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with families, case managers, and school personnel to support student achievement.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, annual reviews, collaborative planning sessions, and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Must hold a valid New York State Certification in Students with Disabilities (All Grades).
  • Experience providing resource room or academic intervention support at the elementary level preferred.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction, IEP implementation, executive functioning support strategies, and behavior management techniques.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and engaging learning environment.
