Job Description

The Rome City School District is seeking a dedicated, student-centered Special Education Teacher to support Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd-grade students with diverse learning needs in a 12:1:1 classroom setting. This role is dedicated to promoting early academic success, strengthening foundational literacy and basic scientific inquiry skills, fostering social-emotional growth, and establishing a nurturing environment that sets young learners on a path toward lifelong independence and confidence.

District Profile

The Rome City School District is proud to serve over 5,200 students across nine schools, supporting a diverse mix of city, rural, and suburban communities. Our student body represents 21 languages, with 60% of our students facing economic challenges. Known for its well-rounded academic and extracurricular opportunities, the district is committed to fostering academic excellence, supporting student well-being, and promoting equitable outcomes. We are dedicated to creating a collaborative and nurturing environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide explicit, differentiated academic instruction aligned with New York State Learning Standards and individual IEP goals for K–2 students.

  • Design and deliver engaging, modified lessons focusing on foundational literacy (phonemic awareness, phonics, early reading comprehension) and basic scientific inquiry tailored for a 12:1:1 environment.

  • Collaborate closely with general education teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and support staff to ensure cohesive curriculum delivery and comprehensive student support.

  • Implement accommodations, modifications, and assistive technologies to ensure access to curriculum and assessments.

  • Support young learners in developing early executive functioning, basic organizational habits, classroom routines, and age-appropriate self-advocacy.

  • Create a highly structured, predictable, and nurturing learning environment that utilizes positive behavior interventions to promote engagement, emotional regulation, and independence.

  • Monitor, document, and analyze student progress through daily data collection, formative assessments, and rigorous IEP goal tracking.

  • Maintain consistent, welcoming communication with families and school personnel to support student achievement and bridge the home-school connection.

  • Actively participate in IEP meetings, annual reviews, and collaborative team planning sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Must hold a valid New York State Certification in Students with Disabilities (All Grades).

  • Experience in high school special education or education support settings preferred.

  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction, IEP implementation, and behavior management techniques.

  • Ability to support and adapt studio-based, project-driven learning for diverse learners.

  • Strong collaboration, communication, and classroom management skills.

  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and engaging learning environment.

Why Join Us?

  • A collaborative and innovative teaching environment.

  • Supportive environment with access to special education resources and training.

  • Opportunities for professional development.

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
